The North Shore combines excellent solar potential with real vulnerability to storm outages and salt air corrosion. AEI has been installing solar, battery, and AC systems across Haleiwa, Waialua, Sunset Beach, Pupukea, and Kahuku since 1993 — and we understand the unique demands of coastal North Shore homes.
North Shore homes get strong solar exposure — the combination of open sky, minimal high-rise shading, and generally south-facing rooflines on plantation-era and newer construction makes the area well-suited for solar. Most North Shore homes install 8–14 kW systems that offset 90–95% of their HECO bill.
But the North Shore has challenges that Honolulu and central Oahu homes do not face. Winter swells bring severe weather. Power outages from fallen trees and damaged lines are more common than in urban areas. And salt air — especially in oceanfront communities from Haleiwa to Sunset Beach — accelerates corrosion on mounting hardware, wiring connections, and outdoor equipment.
The North Shore is one of the areas on Oahu where we most strongly recommend Tesla Powerwall battery storage. Power outages here are not hypothetical — they happen multiple times a year during winter storm season. A Powerwall provides seamless backup when the grid goes down, and solar panels recharge the battery during the day so you can ride out multi-day outages that occasionally hit the North Shore.
We use marine-grade stainless steel and aluminum racking hardware on all North Shore installations. The REC and Hyundai panels we install carry salt mist resistance ratings designed for coastal environments. But hardware alone is not enough — we recommend annual inspections for any system within a mile of the ocean to catch corrosion on connections and mounting points before they affect production.
