Why Go Solar in Hawaii?

Hawaii has the highest electricity rates in the nation — and the best sunshine

$

Slash Your Electric Bill

Hawaii homeowners pay an average of $0.35-0.49/kWh — the highest in the US. Solar can eliminate up to 95% of your bill.

Battery Backup Power

Tesla Powerwall 3 keeps your lights on during outages with 13.5 kWh of storage and seamless backup switching.

30% Federal Tax Credit

The Investment Tax Credit covers 30% of your entire system cost — panels, batteries, and installation.

Increase Home Value

Solar homes sell for an average of 4.1% more. Your system is an investment that pays you back every month.

Grid Export Credits

Hawaiian Electric's SRE program pays you for excess solar energy exported to the grid at competitive rates.

Clean Energy Future

Hawaii targets 100% renewable energy by 2045. Go solar today and be part of the clean energy revolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding solar, battery storage, and Hawaiian Electric programs

Hawaiian Electric Programs

SRE is Hawaiian Electric's grid export program for solar + battery systems. When your system produces more energy than you use, the excess is sent to the grid and you receive credits on your bill at time-of-use rates.

Key benefits:

  • Rates are locked for 7 years, then renew in 3-year periods
  • Peak export rate (5-9pm) is $0.329/kWh on Oahu — the highest payout window
  • With a battery, you can store daytime solar and export during peak hours for maximum credit
  • Program is currently open to new enrollments

BYOD Plus is an incentive program where Hawaiian Electric pays you for access to your battery during peak grid demand. Your Powerwall dispatches stored energy to the grid for just 2 hours per day (6-8pm).

How it works:

  • Upfront payment: $400 per kW of committed battery capacity
  • Dispatch window: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM daily (you choose the window)
  • Term: 5-year commitment
  • Your backup is protected: A minimum 20% battery reserve is always maintained for emergencies
  • You also earn monthly value from the energy dispatched at peak rates

Program eligibility depends on your system configuration and HECO's current enrollment status. In many cases, customers with solar + battery can benefit from both programs — earning export credits during the day through SRE and dispatch incentives in the evening through BYOD+. Our team will help you determine the best program combination for your specific situation during the proposal process.

This is where solar + battery really shines in Hawaii. Here's the daily cycle:

  • 9am - 5pm (Day): Your panels power your home and charge your Powerwall. Excess solar exports at $0.135/kWh.
  • 5pm - 9pm (Peak): Your Powerwall powers your home AND exports to the grid at $0.329/kWh — nearly 2.5x the daytime rate. This is the most valuable window.
  • 9pm - 9am (Overnight): Your battery handles overnight loads. Any remaining export earns $0.189/kWh.

By timing your battery discharge to the peak window, you maximize your export credits significantly compared to daytime-only solar export.

Financial Questions

The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) allows you to deduct 30% of your total solar system cost from your federal taxes. This applies to panels, batteries (Powerwall), inverters, and installation labor. For example, a $40,000 system would receive a $12,000 tax credit, reducing your net cost to $28,000. The 30% rate is available through 2032.

Payback period = Net system cost (after tax credit) divided by annual savings. Your annual savings include reduced electric bills plus any export credits from the SRE program. With Hawaii's high electricity rates, most systems pay for themselves in 5-8 years — and then generate free electricity for the remaining 17-20+ years of the panel warranty.

Hawaii generates most of its electricity from imported oil and LNG — making rates directly vulnerable to global energy market swings. Middle East conflicts, shipping disruptions, and supply chain issues have historically caused sharp rate spikes. Our 3% annual increase estimate reflects this long-term trend. A $350/month bill today becomes ~$450/month in 10 years and ~$735/month in 25 years. Over 25 years, that's over $153,000 paid to the utility. With solar, you lock in your energy cost and are shielded from rate volatility entirely.

System & Equipment

Powerwall 3 is Tesla's latest home battery with a built-in solar inverter. Each unit stores 13.5 kWh of energy and provides 11.5 kW of continuous power. It automatically switches to backup power during grid outages in milliseconds — you won't even notice the lights flicker.

Expansion Packs add 13.5 kWh of additional storage each and connect to a base Powerwall 3, extending your backup duration without needing another full unit.

It depends on your energy usage and goals:

  • 1 Powerwall 3: Ideal for most homes. Covers overnight energy needs and provides essential backup power. Pairs well with homes using under ~1,500 kWh/month.
  • 1 Powerwall 3 + Expansion Pack: For homes with moderate-to-high usage that need extended overnight coverage or longer backup duration.
  • 2 Powerwall 3 units: For large homes with 200A service panels, heavy loads (pool, EV, large AC), or customers wanting whole-home backup capability.

Our calculator recommends the right configuration based on your actual usage.

Our REC 460W panels come with a 25-year product and performance warranty. They typically last 30-35 years with minimal degradation — about 2% in the first year, then only 0.25% per year after that. After 25 years, panels are still producing at approximately 92% of their original output.

Your Powerwall automatically detects the outage and disconnects from the grid within milliseconds, forming its own "island" to power your home. Your solar panels continue charging the battery during the day, and the battery powers your home at night. Many customers don't even realize the grid went down. Without a battery, solar panels alone must shut off during outages for safety reasons (anti-islanding requirement).

Process & Installation

Our calculator provides a solid starting estimate based on your electric bill and home details. The final system design will be refined during a site survey where we assess your actual roof area, orientation, shading, electrical panel, and specific usage patterns. Most estimates are within 10-15% of the final proposal.

The physical installation typically takes 1-3 days depending on system size. The overall timeline from signed contract to system activation is usually 8-16 weeks, which includes permitting, HECO interconnection approval, and scheduling. We handle all the paperwork and permitting for you.
